Increasing Post-Trip Engagement on TripAdvisor Through Retention-Focused Features
While planning a vacation on TripAdvisor, I realized it had been over a year since I last opened the app (honestly, I had to blow the digital dust off the icon just to find the ‘Search’ bar). That moment made me question why a product I rely on to plan my trips becomes irrelevant so quickly. I explored how the experience could evolve to keep users engaged even without an active travel plan.
I only really use this when I’m planning a trip… and then I forget about it.
Research revealed a clear pattern on TripAdvisor—user engagement spikes during trip planning but drops off significantly once the trip ends. This cyclical behavior turns the app into a short-term utility rather than a long-term companion, limiting retention and continued value delivery. These insights highlighted an opportunity to design for relevance beyond just the planning phase
I’d come back to this app more often if it gave me something to do after my trip—not just before it.

User research revealed that engagement on TripAdvisor drops sharply after a trip ends, as users lack a clear reason to return without an active travel plan. To address this, I designed a post-trip engagement system built around a digital travel diary, memory reminders, and interactive events. Users can document their trips in a structured way through the diary, revisit past experiences through timely reminders, and engage with lightweight, travel-inspired events and games tied to their history. A reward system reinforces these interactions without requiring high effort or commitment. By focusing on low-friction, nostalgia-driven engagement, the solution creates meaningful reasons for users to return—shifting the app from a one-time planning tool to an ongoing travel companion.
Off the record
I almost turned this into a full-on travel blogging platform. Cool idea… until I realized I was basically asking users to become part-time content creators. Not happening. Scrapping that idea hurt a bit, but it made the final solution way more realistic—and way more usable.
